I honestly can’t reblog this enough. I’m sure I’m going to get plenty of shit from people who disagree, but I think the shocking inequality as far as the rights of homosexual people is no different from the past inequalities in United States history. Obviously I’m not going to go as far as to equate this to slavery, but I think that there are a lot of similarities between the lack of rights that gay people have and the lack of rights that women and African Americans have had in the past. If it was unfair to only allow one gender to vote, then why is it fair to only allow one sexual orientation to marry? If it’s not just to deny people certain education or other benefits based on the color of their skin, then why is it just to deny people the right to marry based on who they want to marry? What’s next, are we going to prohibit marriages that transcend race or religion since marriages that transcend gender are still illegal in most states? I love the United States and the idea of equality, but equality doesn’t exist if it’s withheld from certain groups of people based on religion, race, gender, or, as is the case today, sexual orientation. Legalize gay marriage.
